The performance and development of ACDP officers is closely monitored at all times. ACDP Officers must maintain a personal development plan which is reviewed during case conferences.
The ACDP comprises four phases. Through evidencing continued commitment, ability, learning and development, officers are expected to progress through these phases from their point of entry.
Phase 1 - Constable
During Phase 1, operational and broader developmental experience is gained as a Constable. If entering the Service via the ACDP as a graduate / undergraduate, officers must complete their two-year probationary period and thereafter pass the Diploma in Police Service in Leadership and Management. This Award qualifies officers to be considered eligible for promotion and generally takes eighteen months to complete.
Probationary officers joining the Programme as a graduate / undergraduate must likewise successfully complete their probationary period and thereafter pass the Diploma in Police Service Leadership and Management.
Constables outwith their probation must be qualified for promotion beyond Inspector rank to be eligible to apply for the Programme.
The minimum period that officers remain within this phase is dependant upon the point at which they pass the above promotion qualification and fully prove themselves ready for progression.
Phase 2 – Sergeant
During Phase 2, operational and broader developmental experience is gained as a temporary / promoted Sergeant. Officers are expected to complete programmes 1 and 2 of the Initial Leadership Development Programme as soon as reasonably practicable.
Officers must fully demonstrate that they can effectively lead and manage.
The maximum recommended period that officers remain within this phase is forty-two months, of which at least twelve months must be completed in an operational role.
Phase 3 – Inspector
Wider operational and developmental experience is gained during this phase as a temporary / promoted Inspector. Officers must complete the Intermediate Leadership Development Programme which is designed for those who have increased, or are about to increase their leadership and managerial responsibilities.
The maximum recommended period that officers remain within Phase 3 is forty-two months, of which at least twelve months must be completed in an operational role.
Phase 4 – Chief Inspector
Officers are expected to further expand their skills, knowledge and experience within operational and broader developmental placements, as a temporary / promoted Chief Inspector. Relevant component parts of the Senior Leadership Development Programme must be completed during this time.
Officers will graduate from the ACDP upon promotion to Superintendent or otherwise as a Chief Inspector following agreement from key stakeholders.
ACDP officers may be required to leave the Programme where they do not continue to maintain the high standards and levels of performance sought.
ACDP officers leaving the Programme on promotion to Superintendent will be able to access Senior Careers Development Service facilities.
