Selection Process

The ACDP selection process consists of 4 separate stages:

Stage 1
Applicants must complete an ACDP application form which is submitted to their parent force or the force they are seeking to join. This will be made available to assessors at the Force Selection Board and Assessment Centre should applicants reach these stages.

Stage 2
Applicants sit a series of aptitude tests under examination conditions. Those who are successful will thereafter progress to a Force Selection Board.

Where applicants are marginally unsuccessful in the aptitude tests, they may still be invited to progress to a Force Selection Board if the evidence provided in their application form meets the necessary standard.

Stage 3
The Force Selection Board involves an interview and ten minute presentation on a given topic. Successful applicants from this stage will be nominated to undertake the National Assessment Centre.

Stage 4
The final selection stage is an Assessment Centre which involves individual and group exercises. This is held at the Scottish Police College.

Successful applicants from the Assessment Centre are recommended to their force for appointment to the ACDP and enter the Programme at the appropriate phase.

Key Behaviours
The ACDP application form, Force Selection Board and Assessment Centre assess applicants across the following key behaviours:

  • Respect for Diversity
  • Effective Communication
  • Leadership
  • Management Ability
  • Personal Effectiveness
  • Team Working
