Probationer training

Module 5 - Operational Phase

Probationary officers return to their own Force and continue to develop knowledge, understanding, skills and behaviours in the live environment with the support of supervisors, experienced officers and force training staff.

Module 5 is not definitively time bound as officers will conclude this period on completion of an Open and Distance Learning (ODL) Examination. This will normally be completed after 26 - 40 weeks have elapsed from Module 4.

During this phase probationary officers are expected to complete 9 Open and Distance Learning packages:

  • Road Policing (Miscellaneous Offences)
  • Management of Police Information (MoPI)
  • Animal Health and Welfare
  • Dangerous Dogs
  • Dogs
  • Human Trafficking
  • Firearms Certificates
  • Foreign Drivers
  • RIPSA

The aim of incorporating ODL packs into the operational phase is to maintain links with formal learning and to enhance the individual knowledge base.

Officers are required to sit an ODL Examination when they have reached between 12 and 16 months service – the final academic assessment.
