Police Probationary Training – Once You Have Been Appointed

On joining the Scottish Police Service, a police officer begins a two-year probationary period.  On appointment, Constables will attend a one-week induction course at Force Headquarters. They will then commence a residential 13 week training course at the Scottish Police College, Tulliallan Castle, Kincardine. This training will be supplemented by a local training course at Force Headquarters. The ultimate aim of all training is to thoroughly prepare officers for their introduction to front line duties within their home force.

After this initial training process, Probationary Constables are posted to operational duties under the guidance of an experienced Tutor Constable and under the overall supervision of a Sergeant who will monitor progress throughout the probationary period.

During the 2 year probationary period, all probationary officers will be expected to sit & pass various exams in relation to legislation as well as a fitness assessment.

After approximately fourteen months service Constables will return to Force headquarters for further training, followed by a 2 day Reconvention Course at the Scottish Police College. Officers will then return to operational duties for further “on the job” training.
