Superintendents & Equivalent Police Staff  

SCDS provides ongoing development opportunities for Superintendents and equivalent police staff through two different approaches:

  1. Independent Development
  2. Facilitated Development
  1. INDEPENDENT DEVELOPMENT
    This allows self-nominating participants to access two different web-based diagnostic tools:

    Hay Group's Inventory of Leadership Styles (PULSE)
    This self score tool helps you to understand the relationship between your leadership style and the work environment you create for your staff
    NPIA's Police ICF 360 Feedback System
    This tool allows you to complete a self assessment against the managerial competencies of the Scottish PDR. It provides a summary snapshot of how you view your performance in the workplace and highlights your areas of strengths and areas for development.

    In addition, Independent Development participants can also participate in:

    Introductory Personal & Professional Development Planning (PDP) Workshop
    The above tools are complemented by this workshop which will introduce you to the SCDS PDP model and enable you to consider your development needs and formulate a PDP plan. The workshop has been developed and is delivered by SCDS Development Advisors.

    Note: Both diagnostic tools will be familiar to staff in your Force HR/Career Development Departments so you will be able to discus the outcomes with them. Whilst there is no requirement to use any particular tool prior to participating in the Introductory PDP Workshop, you will gain more benefit from the workshop if you have completed the tools before attendance.

    How Do I Access Superintendent & Equivalent Staff Independent Development?
    Complete the Independent Development Application Form and forward to your Force SPOC (as indicated on the application form(. Your Force SPOC will confirm your eligibility and note any costs associated with your request. Once verified, your application will be forwarded to SCDS and you will then be provided with web access to the diagnostic tools and provisional dates for PDP workshops.

  2. FACILITATED DEVELOPMENT
    This approach provides lateral and vertical development for Superintending ranks and equivalent police staff who request this support through and are nominated by your Head of HR. Before applying for Facilitated Development you are encouraged to undertake Independent Development.

    The development opportunities available will be tailored according to the development needs of each participant. and may include:

    • Development Advisor (DA) one-to-one sessions
    • Personal & Professional Development Planning (PDP)
    • Group activities/ Workshop participation
    • Work-shadowing

    How Do I Access Superintendent & Equivalent Staff Facilitated Development?
    Complete Facilitated Development Application Form and forward to your Head of HR. Your Head of HR will confirm your eligibility, note any costs associated with your request, and forward your application to SCDS.

Costs
The cost of all tools will be recovered in full from your Force.
Development Advisor time for individual sessions and providing feedback for diagnostic tools used in Facilitated Development incurs no cost to Forces.

Diversity Monitoring
You will be asked to complete a Diversity monitoring form. This information will be recorded anonymously for management information purposes. Please return to SCDS in the envelope provided.
