Road Policing Division

Introduction

When it was first proposed that Tulliallan Castle should be acquired for use as a Scottish Police College, the buildings in the Blackhall area of Tulliallan, consisting of stables, garages, houses and cottages, had been identified as being suitable for conversion to a "Traffic School".  In 1963, non-residential driver training began at Tulliallan with residential accommodation becoming available in 1964.  Over the intervening years the work of the Division has evolved in response to the changing environment.

Today, nineteen distinct training courses are delivered as part of a programme which meets the needs of the Police Service in Scotland.

Training Provision

The Road Policing Division provides centralised training to all Scottish Road Policing officers, offering a wide variety of training.  Officers undertake the core training required to complete the Scottish Qualifications Authority Diploma in Road Policing Operations and also a number of other specialised training courses such as Pursuit Management, Security Escort Driving and Road Collision Investigation.  The Division also provides specialised driver training for covert policing operatives and training in advanced driving techniques to members of Her Majesty’s armed forces and Ministerial chauffeurs.   In the provision of these courses, staff of the Road Policing Division deliver a wide range of classroom and practical training much of which may be transferable to external organisations.

The Division strives to provide the highest quality of training to improve the capability and capacity of all 8 Scottish forces and the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency in order that they can deliver a safer, stronger Scotland to the communities we serve.

You can download the Divisional strategy in PDF format.

The Division strives to meet the needs of it’s customers through a flexible training calender.  This approach has allowed us to offer places on specialised courses such as traffic management, Collision Investigation etc to colleagues from England,  Wales and Northern Ireland.  More recently we have had the privelige of facilitating a Collision Investigation course to officers from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
